pro familia: More than 50 Years for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

pro familia is the leading non-governmental service and consumer organization for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Germany. Founded in 1952, it is a charity with a Federal structure. As a founder member of the externer Link:

International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) it is closely linked to international developments and activities in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights

pro familia is politically and religiously independent. It specialises in issues of concern to the consumer in the area of sexual and reproductive rights.

pro familia provides a full array of professional services of highest quality. Consumer needs and rights are put in the centre of all pro familia activities. Throughout Germany 1,200 pro familia social and medical professionals provide services in 170 counselling clinics as well as integrated counselling, sterilization and abortion services in five specialized centres. Each year pro familia reaches some 200,000 clients with counselling, and 185,000 young women and men with sexuality education. Furthermore pro familia offers online counselling (20,000 enquiries annually) and information (about 1 million visitors annually) as well as an automatic telephone service on post-contraception in different languages.

pro familia counselling services focus on contraception, pregnancy, infertility, sexuality and relationships, abortion, sexual violence and women’s and men’s health issues. pro familia also provides services for specific target groups such as adolescents, immigrants, older women and men, women and men with physical and mental handicaps.

As a consumer organization pro familia concentrates on issue development and advocacy, such as prescription free emergency contraception, cost-free contraceptives, sexual and reproductive rights. It builds alliances and provides expertise, experience and contacts.

networks with similar national and international organisations as well as with IPPF Member Asso-ciations focused especially on Eastern Europe
publishes four issues annually of a periodical for about 5.000 members
produces information and newsletters on current and special issues, publishes position papers and standards for professional staff, volunteers and honorary representatives as well as for the political debates.
