Abortion for medical reasons

If continuing the pregnancy poses a serious threat to the life or physical or mental health of the pregnant person, there may be medical grounds for terminating the pregnancy.

Legal requirements

  • In Germany, this is regulated by Section 218a (2) of the Criminal Code.
  • It is not subject to any time limits. This means that termination is also possible after the 12th week of pregnancy.
  • The medical indication must be made by a physician.
  • The physician must wait three days before certifying this indication. The time limit does not apply if there is an acute danger to the life of the pregnant person.
  • The indication must be provided in writing before the procedure.
  • The doctor who issues the indication is obliged to provide the pregnant woman with comprehensive information and advise her on possible sources of support.
  • The indication may not be issued by the doctor who performs the termination.
  • The procedure may only be performed by a physician with the consent of the pregnant person.

Cost coverage

  • Health insurance companies cover the costs of the abortion, including medical treatment and any necessary follow-up care.
